The Canadiana Suite: Coureur des Bois

First person perspective of a night hike.
The headlamp projects my gaze into the pitch dark forest.
My field of vision directly illuminates the frame.
There is a dialogue between what is seen and recorded.

Most Canadians - and I speak for everyone, are unfamiliar
with the vast majority of our wilderness. A detachment
that's become a Canadian tradition. The coureur des bois
mediated our fears. The train carved the land and now airplanes
distance us even further from the ground. Our landscape
is alien to us, yet it surrounds us. This series is a first
person perspective of the Canadian relationship to the forest,
to the foliage, to the fear, to the unfamiliar icons that
define our identity abroad. This is how we see our nation.
