Synthesis in Colour
This series aims to find a photographic analogue to the practice of genetically modifying nature. The technology of the camera
coupled with the relative biology of celluloid (relative to digital image capturing technologies) creates a synthesis, an allegory of the hybridization
practices of agriculture and horticulture. Technology is used to create visually more appealing agricultural food products and in this series, the
camera and the technique of multiple exposure ? a hybrid of two separate photos conjoined in camera is used to create an aesthetic object, visually
appealing, yet wholly unnatural. Just like genetic modification creates a product that seems natural and unblemished, it is the tyranny of science
over biology that has created such an illusion. The multiple-exposure technique results in a hybrid photo where the lines between the two separate
pro-filmic events are utterly destroyed, resulting in one cohesive image, reborn together as though they were never separate.
